Wide plank vs narrow plank flooring: which should you choose?

Wide plank versus narrow plank flooring comes down to three trades: look, room size and cost. Wide planks give a calmer floor with fewer joints and roughly 60% less cutting work, but they waste more material, and the penalty concentrates in exactly the rooms where wide boards already look out of scale. When we laid 6,750 simulated floors, a 305 mm extra-wide plank averaged 10.2% waste against 5.7% for a 94 mm strip, yet the step most buyers actually make, from a 192 mm standard to a 244 mm wide board, cost only 0.9 percentage points. In a room over 20 m² the wide-plank look is close to free. In a 6 m² hallway it is the most expensive format choice you can make.
What counts as wide, standard and narrow?
Plank width bands are marketing terms, but they map onto real formats. This is what the labels mean on the shelf across laminate, vinyl and wood ranges:

Width rarely travels alone. Wide ranges are usually long ranges too, often 1,800 to 2,050 mm against the standard 1,285 mm, and length has its own waste cost that almost nothing published mentions. The full run of formats, including pack coverage, is in the plank sizes guide.
How does plank width change the look of a room?
The visual argument for wide planks is joint density. Fewer, wider boards mean fewer lines across the floor, and that changes the character of the room:
- Wide planks read as calm and modern. A 305 mm board puts a third as many long joints in the floor as a 94 mm strip, so the surface reads as planes of material rather than a grid of boards.
- Narrow planks read as busy or traditional. More joints give rhythm and texture, which is why strip floors suit period rooms, and why parquet patterns are cut from narrow blocks.
- Scale matters. A 300 mm board in a 2 m wide room is a seventh of the floor per row, and oversized elements in a small space draw attention to how small it is. Narrow and standard widths sit more comfortably in compact rooms.
- Length belongs with width. Wide-and-short boards look stubby; the premium look pairs width with length, which is why wide ranges run long.
Which width suits your room size?
The material cost of the wide-plank look depends on the room more than on the board. These are measured penalties for choosing a 305 mm plank over a 192 mm standard plank in the same room, from our plank width study:

A hallway punishes wide boards twice: waste is already high because nearly every board touches both walls, and the wide format adds almost 4 points on top, a problem the hallway guide covers in detail. Large open rooms are the opposite case, where the penalty roughly matches the rounding to whole packs and the calmer surface has the space to work.
What does the choice cost in waste and cutting work?
Width buys labour with material, and narrow boards make the opposite trade. Both sides of it are measured in the study rather than estimated:

Two things are worth knowing about that table. First, the widely repeated "add 3% for wide boards" rule only holds at the 305 mm extreme; for the 244 mm boards most shops sell as wide plank, the real figure is under 1 point. Second, the cutting saving is real but so is the flatness demand: a wide board bridges more subfloor per piece, so dips that a narrow strip would follow become rocking points under a wide one. Budget the subfloor preparation before banking the saved cuts.
Do wide planks cost more to buy?
Usually, and on three separate lines rather than one:
- Price per square metre. Wide and extra-wide boards sit in premium ranges, so the sticker price is higher before waste enters the calculation.
- Waste multiplies the price. The real cost of a floor is price times bought area, and bought area includes waste. Two extra waste points on a 20 m² room is roughly half a pack of material, which is the study's measured gap between standard and extra wide.
- Pack rounding hits harder. Wide-board packs often cover less area, and small rooms round up to whole packs, so the same percentage waste costs more cash in exactly the rooms where the percentage is also highest.

So which should you choose?
Work through the decision in this order and it mostly makes itself:
- Room over 20 m² with long sightlines? Wide or extra wide. The waste penalty is 1 to 2 points, the look is what the format is for.
- Hallway, landing or room under 10 m²? Standard or narrow. You save 2 to 4 waste points and the scale looks right.
- Period property or pattern ambitions? Narrow. Strip floors and herringbone want narrow formats by definition.
- Uneven subfloor you cannot fully flatten? Narrower is more forgiving, whatever the room size.

- The cutting is easier because there are fewer rows: cuts per square metre fell by about 62% from the narrowest to the widest format we measured. But wide boards are less forgiving of an uneven subfloor, since each board bridges more of it, so preparation matters more.
- What plank width do most people buy?
- The standard laminate format is roughly 190 to 245 mm wide and 1,280 to 1,380 mm long. Boards from about 240 mm up are sold as wide plank, and 300 mm or more as extra wide. Narrow means anything under about 140 mm, including 94 mm strip formats.
