Laminate flooring in a kitchen: what works, what fails and where the floor should stop

Laminate works in a kitchen if you get three decisions right: buy a water resistant board rather than a standard one, keep water out of the edges with sealed gaps and silicone along the wet runs, and stop the floor at the plinth line instead of running it under the units. The last one surprises people most. A laminate floor floats, and a kitchen is the one room where heavy fixed furniture wants to pin it down, so where the floor stops matters as much as which board you buy. Get those right and laminate is a perfectly sensible kitchen floor; get them wrong and the kitchen is where laminate fails fastest in the house.
Is laminate a good idea in a kitchen?
It is a fair fight between laminate and vinyl, and an honest list settles it for your kitchen rather than in general:

The failure mode is specific: it is almost never the surface, it is the joints. The wear layer shrugs off traffic that would mark a real wood floor, but the core is a wood fibre board, and where two boards click together there is a seam water can reach. Standard laminate swells there within hours. Boards sold as water resistant seal the joint and state a protection period for standing water, and that stated period is the difference between a mopped-up spill and a permanently raised seam. If the floor will regularly have water on it, a busy family kitchen with a dog bowl and a dishwasher, vinyl or LVT is the safer call and that guide weighs the two properly.
Should laminate go under the kitchen units?
No, and this is the layout decision that separates a kitchen from every other room. Laminate is a floating floor: the whole surface is one raft that expands and contracts with the seasons, which is why every wall gets an 8 to 12 mm gap. A run of base units, a fitted dresser or an island is not furniture in the normal sense. It is screwed down, it weighs hundreds of kilos loaded, and if the floor runs underneath it the raft is pinned to the subfloor at that point. The movement that should have disappeared into the expansion gap now has nowhere to go, and it reappears as gaps opening at the joints or a peaked row somewhere else in the room.
So the working rules are:
- Kitchen first, floor second. Fit the units, then lay the floor up to the plinth line with a normal expansion gap. The plinth hides the gap exactly as skirting does at a wall.
- Measure to the front of the units, not the wall behind them. The floor the units stand on is not your problem to buy boards for.
- Freestanding appliances are fine. A fridge freezer or a washing machine stands on four feet, so the raft still moves underneath it. Roll appliances in over a strip of hardboard so the feet do not gouge the new floor.
- The exception is a planned refit. If the kitchen will be replaced soon, some fitters lay the whole floor and accept the pinning risk so the next kitchen's footprint is free to change. Make that trade knowingly rather than by habit.
What does a kitchen island do to the layout?
It turns the kitchen into the hardest room class in our data. An island is an obstacle in the middle of the floor: every row that meets it must be cut on both sides, the offcuts are often too short to reuse legally, and the joints either side still have to stagger. The same goes for a peninsula or any fitted run that juts into the room, which is why a kitchen is rarely the simple rectangle it looks like on a plan. It is an L-shape or a doughnut drawn by the plinth lines.
That geometry shows up in the numbers. When we tested the usual "add 10%" buying rule across 250 simulated rooms, rooms with an island or a fixed unit in them ran out of boards about three times as often as plain rectangles. The layout planner takes the room with the island and the plinth lines drawn in as obstacles and returns the cut list and the exact pack count, which is precisely the situation a rule of thumb handles worst.
Which direction and where should you start?
The same principles as any room, bent around the units:
- Run boards down the longest sight line, usually along the room towards the window or the door you enter through. In a galley kitchen the answer is the hallway answer: along the galley, because rows laid across a 2 m gap between plinth lines are all cuts and no whole boards. - Start against the longest uninterrupted plinth line or wall, and check the last row's width at the far side before the first board clicks together, exactly as where to start laying laminate walks through. In a kitchen the "walls" that matter are often the plinth lines, because that is where the visible floor begins and ends.
- Kitchen-diners get a decision, not a default. Running one floor through into the dining space looks best but couples the two spaces' movement and direction; a threshold at the pinch point is the cautious call. The trade-offs live in the transitions between rooms guide.
How do you keep water out of a laminate kitchen floor?
Water resistance is a system, not just a board. The board's sealed joints buy you time; the details below decide whether water ever reaches a vulnerable edge at all:
- Silicone the wet runs. Where the floor meets the plinth under the sink and the dishwasher, run a bead of silicone instead of leaving the gap open. Flexible sealant keeps the expansion gap working while blocking water.
- Seal cut edges where the manufacturer asks. Cut boards expose raw core. Along the sink run and at the external door, a wipe of sealant on the cut edge before the board goes down closes the one unprotected surface.
- Mind the dishwasher bay. A slow leak under a fitted appliance is the classic laminate kitchen death. A cheap drip tray under the machine turns a hidden leak into a visible puddle.
- Mat at the external door. Same grit-and-water logic as a hallway: catch it before it reaches the floor.
How much laminate does a kitchen need?
Less area than the room suggests and more margin than the standard advice. Measuring to the plinth fronts typically knocks 2 to 4 m² off a kitchen's floor area, but the island and the doorways put the cuts up, and obstacle rooms are where flat percentage rules fail most often in our data. Practical answer: measure to the unit fronts, then either run the real layout through the layout planner for an exact pack count, or take the laminate calculator and use a 15% margin rather than 10 when the kitchen has an island or a peninsula. The spare boards are not wasted in a kitchen: it is the room most likely to need a board swapped mid-life, and a matching spare from the same batch is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
