How to plan a flooring layout free: every board before you buy a pack

The gap between the two shows up in waste. A straight lay in a simple room runs 5% to 8% waste when the layout is planned; the flat 10% rule a calculator leans on is a hedge against not knowing. What are the free ways to plan a flooring layout?
Four routes cost nothing up front, and they are not equivalent:
- Graph paper. Free and honest. Works for one rectangular room; the row arithmetic is manageable by hand. L-shapes, doorways and patterns overwhelm it quickly.
- Retailer room visualisers. These paint a product photo onto a picture of your room. Useful for choosing a colour, silent on board placement, stagger, waste and packs. Not planners.
- General CAD tools. A free CAD tool can draw any room, but it knows nothing about stagger rules, offcut reuse or pack sizes, so you end up doing all the flooring logic yourself on top of learning CAD.

How do you plan a floor layout in five steps?
- Measure and draw the room to size. Millimetres, every alcove and doorway, measured properly. The plan is only as real as the shape you feed it.
- Enter the boards you are actually buying. Length, width and boards per pack from the listing, so the pack count is a count rather than an estimate.
- Pick direction and pattern. Direction usually follows the longest run or the light, and it changes the cut count. Pattern sets the workload: a straight lay averages 1.8 cuts per square metre, herringbone needs 4.3 times as many.

What should the planner check that you would miss?
A good planner applies the rules a fitter carries in their head, before the first cut:
- Joint stagger. Minimum offsets between end joints in neighbouring rows, no H-joints, no staircase patterns creeping across the floor. The stagger rules are easy to state and tedious to enforce by hand.
- Sliver rows. Last rows and edge pieces below about 50 mm get flagged or planned out entirely, instead of discovered at the far wall.
- Doorways. Whether to run boards through a doorway or break with a threshold changes the row plan in both rooms; the planner treats the doorway as part of the layout, not an afterthought.
- Offcut reuse. Offcuts get assigned to later rows where the joint rules allow, which is where planned layouts save most of their material.
