Herringbone flooring calculator: boards, packs and waste, worked through

To calculate herringbone flooring: room area, plus 15%, divided into boards or packs, rounded up. For a 20 m² (about 215 sq ft) room and a 600 × 125 mm (about 23.6 x 4.9 in) herringbone board, that is 20 × 1.15 = 23 m², at 13.4 boards per square metre roughly 307 boards, and at a typical 0.9 m² per pack, 26 packs. The whole calculation is three lines of arithmetic; the judgment lives in the 15%, which is a measured number rather than folklore, and in knowing what the arithmetic cannot tell you about your room. The worked example, line by line
A 5 × 4 m living room, one doorway, in a 600 × 125 mm herringbone board sold 12 boards (0.9 m²) to the pack:

Two habits keep the answer honest. Compute boards per square metre from the exact board you are buying, because herringbone formats range from about 400 × 100 mm up to 700 × 150 mm and the count swings accordingly. And round up at the pack line only, not at every line, or the rounding stacks into a pack you did not need.
Why 15%, when planned waste is only 7%?
Because the margin and the waste answer different questions. When we laid 250 simulated rooms in herringbone with the layout planned, the waste averaged about 7% at the classic 45°, a long way below the 15% to 20% the old rules of thumb quote. But averages do not buy your boards. In the same test rooms, a flat 10% margin left about 1 herringbone room in 28 short of boards, while 15% covered every single one. The margin exists for the rooms on the wrong side of the average, and running short mid-pattern is expensive twice: a top-up pack weeks later often arrives from a different production batch, in a pattern where every board sits against six neighbours.
So: plan the layout so the waste lands near 7%, buy with the 15% margin, and return the unopened spare packs afterwards.
What a flat calculator cannot see
Adding 15% to the area answers the buying question. Three layout questions stay open, and they are the ones that decide how the room actually looks:
- Does the module fit? Herringbone repeats in units set by the board's length-to-width ratio, and a narrow room can fit an awkward fraction of the zigzag across its width, exactly the last-row problem in pattern form.
- Where does the spine go? The pattern is set out from a centre line, not a wall, and the layout guide shows how a 2 mm spine error reappears at every skirting board.
- How much cutting are you signing up for? Herringbone averages 7.7 cuts per square metre, 4.3 times a straight lay, with a mitred end on most planks. The material margin is 15%; the labour margin is the bigger surprise.

Herringbone or chevron changes the calculation
The two zigzags calculate differently, and it pays to know which one you are buying before running any numbers. Herringbone uses rectangular boards that overlap in an interlocking zigzag; chevron boards arrive with their ends pre-mitred and meet on a continuous arrow line. Chevron's edge cuts are far less reusable: in our measurements it needed 21 cuts per square metre and stayed expensive however well planned, so no flat margin covers it reliably and the room should be planned board by board before buying.
