Chevron layout planner: the point line planned before the first mitre

Chevron is the most expensive floor to lay that we have measured, on both counts that matter: 21 cuts per square metre across 250 simulated rooms against 1.8 for a straight lay, and 24.5% average waste, well above the 15% to 20% usually quoted, because a mitred offcut rarely fits anywhere else. A pattern this costly to cut deserves to be planned. This planner places the full chevron field in your real room shape, balances the point lines, and reports the true waste and pack count for your boards and your room.

How it works

1

Draw your room

Sketch the floor to your measurements. The room shape decides where the point lines land and where the border cuts fall.

2

Enter your chevron boards

Length and width from the range you are buying. Chevron boards come mitred from the factory, and the planner lays the pattern for those exact dimensions.

What you get

The point line balanced, not guessed

Chevron runs to continuous point lines down the room, and where they sit is the one decision you cannot fix later. The planner places them so the pattern balances the space.

A waste figure the folklore underestimates

Chevron averaged 24.5% waste across our 250 simulated rooms, more than the 15% to 20% usually quoted. The planner counts your actual room so you buy the right packs, instead of guessing wrong in either direction.

Cut counts you can price

Chevron averaged 21 cuts per square metre in our data, the highest of nine patterns, and each mitred cut is slower than a square one. The plan shows the workload before you commit to it.

Chevron checked against herringbone

Same boards, related pattern, very different workload: herringbone averaged 7.7 cuts per square metre against 21 for chevron. Run both on your room and let the numbers pick.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste does chevron flooring produce?
More than the usual advice says. Chevron averaged 24.5% waste across our 250 simulated rooms, above the 15% to 20% folklore range, because the mitred offcuts rarely fit anywhere else. Buying blind to the folklore number is how chevron jobs run out of boards. The planner counts your actual room so the pack count is right the first time.
Can I lay chevron with herringbone blocks?
No. Herringbone uses plain rectangular blocks; chevron boards are mitred at the ends so the two legs meet in a continuous point line. They are different products, which is why chevron ranges cost more per square metre.
Chevron or herringbone, which is cheaper to install?
Herringbone, almost always. In our 250-room dataset herringbone averaged 7.7 cuts per square metre and chevron 21, and the mitred ends on chevron make each cut slower. If the quote surprised you, the cut counts are why.
Is the chevron layout planner free?
Planning is free without an account: draw the room, enter your boards, run the pattern and see the layout preview and the first two boards of the cut list. The waste, pack count, complete cut list and downloads are a one-time unlock for the room, or Pro.
