Stagger pattern generator: every joint placed, every offset kept

The stagger rule is simple to state and tedious to satisfy: end joints in neighbouring rows must clear a minimum offset, usually 200 to 300 mm, with no H joints and no staircase runs, and most manufacturers make it a warranty condition. Working that out board by board at the saw is where long afternoons go.

This generator lays the rows in your real room shape with the rule built in. Pick a fixed stagger like half or third board, or a random stagger that actually looks random, and every starter board is chosen so the joints clear the rule from the first row to the last.

How it works

1

Draw your room

Sketch the floor to your measurements, doorways and alcoves included. Joint positions depend on where rows start and end, so the real shape matters.

2

Pick your boards and stagger rule

Board length and width from your range, then the stagger: half board, third, a custom offset, or random. Set the minimum joint offset from your installation sheet.

Every row start chosen so the offsets clear, with the layout preview, waste, packs and the cut list to follow at the saw.

What you get

Offsets that clear everywhere

The generator trims starter boards so every joint clears your minimum offset, instead of warning you after two rows are already down.

No H joints, no staircases

Joints lining up two rows apart and joints stepping evenly across rows are caught in the plan and fixed where the room allows, with any left listed as warnings. They are the two patterns that make a floor look wrong from the doorway.

Random that looks random

Repeating a half or third stagger produces visible diagonals. The random setting varies every row start independently while still honouring the joint rule.

The waste question answered

Across 250 measured rooms, every disciplined stagger policy landed within 0.2 waste points of the others. Pick the look you want; the packs to buy barely move.

Frequently asked questions

What stagger pattern should I use for laminate or vinyl plank?
Any pattern that keeps end joints in neighbouring rows at least the required minimum apart, typically 200 to 300 mm. Half and third board staggers look regular and orderly; a random stagger looks like a wood floor. Waste is nearly identical either way in our measurements, so it is a look decision, not a cost one.
Does the stagger pattern affect waste?
Barely. Across 250 simulated rooms every proper stagger policy landed within 0.2 waste points of the others. The measurable costs live elsewhere: pattern choice, room shape and board size.
Can I set the minimum joint offset from my installation sheet?
Yes. Enter the offset from your installation sheet and the generator plans to it; the stagger controls are clamped so you cannot pick a setting that violates your own rule.
Is the stagger pattern generator free?
Planning is free without an account: draw the room, pick the stagger, run the layout and see the layout preview and the first two boards of the cut list. The waste, pack count, complete cut list and downloads are a one-time unlock for the room, or Pro.
