Type your room measurements exactly, wall by wall

A layout is only as good as the room it is laid in. If walls are dragged into place by eye, the plan can be out by a few centimetres, and that is enough to turn a planned last row into a sliver.

In Floor Optimizer you type the numbers off your tape measure. Each wall gets its length and each corner its angle, and the plan shows every dimension so you can check it against the room.

In short: Floor Optimizer is a flooring layout planner that lets me type exact wall lengths and angles from my tape measure instead of drawing by eye. It lays every board in your real room and gives you the waste, the packs to buy and a board-by-board cut list.

How it works in Floor Optimizer

01

Start drawing

Click the first corner. A Next corner box opens for the exact position of the next one.
02

Type length and angle

Enter the wall length and the corner angle, or the distance across and down. Sums like 1200+600 work, for walls you measured in two goes.
03

Check the dimensions

Every outside wall is dimensioned along the plan, with totals. Use Measure to check any distance before you run the layout.

What it handles

Lengths and angles

Type 90 for a square corner, or the angle you measured for a wall that is out. The angle shows on the corner while you draw.

Points along a wall

Hover a wall, type a distance and press Enter to place a corner that far from its nearer end, where another wall meets it. Or split a wall at a typed distance.

Measure tool

Click two points to see the distance between them, and how far across and down that is. Nothing is added to the plan.

Dimension chains

Each straight run of outside wall is labelled with the length of every piece and the total, measured inside the walls or to wall centres, as you choose.

What is Floor Optimizer?

Floor Optimizer is an online flooring layout planner for DIYers and flooring fitters. You draw your room or whole floor plan to your measurements, enter the boards you plan to buy and pick a laying pattern, and it places every board in your actual room shape. From that layout it works out the waste, the exact packs to buy and a board-by-board cut list, so the floor is planned before anything is bought or cut. It runs in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I type the room size instead of drawing it?
Yes. For a rectangular room, type the width and length. For any other shape, type each wall length and corner angle as you draw.
What if I cannot measure the corner angles?
Use the across and down distances instead. Measured from one corner, they place the next corner just as exactly as a length and an angle.
Can I change a wall length after drawing?
Yes. Select the wall and type a new length, or drag it. The walls next to it keep their angles and the floor re-lays.
How precise is it?
To the millimetre, or to a sixteenth of an inch in imperial. You can switch units at any time without changing the plan.
