A flooring planner in feet and inches, or metric

Flooring is measured in millimetres in most of the world and in feet and inches in the US, and the boards on the shelf might be labelled in either. If a planner only works in one system, you convert every number by hand, and that is where mistakes happen.

Floor Optimizer works in both. Enter and read everything in feet and inches, to the nearest sixteenth of an inch, or in millimetres, centimetres and metres, and switch whenever you like.

In short: Floor Optimizer is a flooring layout planner that works in feet and inches as well as millimetres and metres. It lays every board in your real room and gives you the waste, the packs to buy and a board-by-board cut list.

How it works in Floor Optimizer

01

Choose your units

Metric or imperial, switchable at any point without losing anything.
02

Measure and enter

Type distances and board sizes the way your tape and the box show them.
03

Read the plan in your units

Cut lengths, areas and the PDF use the system you chose. The CSV gives inches as decimals.

What it handles

Down to 1/16 inch

Imperial cut lengths are shown as feet, inches and sixteenths, the way a tape measure reads.

Square feet or square metres

Floor area, waste and cost per area follow your units.

Precise underneath

Everything is calculated to the same precision whichever units you read it in, so switching never rounds the plan.

Any currency

Prices can be entered in your own currency for the shopping list.

What is Floor Optimizer?

Floor Optimizer is an online flooring layout planner for DIYers and flooring fitters. You draw your room or whole floor plan to your measurements, enter the boards you plan to buy and pick a laying pattern, and it places every board in your actual room shape. From that layout it works out the waste, the exact packs to buy and a board-by-board cut list, so the floor is planned before anything is bought or cut. It runs in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use feet and inches?
Yes. Room sizes, board sizes and cut lengths can all be entered and shown in feet and inches, down to a sixteenth of an inch.
Can I switch between metric and imperial?
Yes, at any time. The plan does not change, only how the numbers are shown.
Does it show square feet?
Yes. With imperial units, areas and cost per area are shown in square feet.
What if my boards are labelled in millimetres but I measure in inches?
Switch units while entering the board size, then switch back. Everything converts exactly.
