Cut flooring waste by planning every cut and reusing offcuts
Most flooring waste comes from offcuts that could have started another row but ended up in the skip, and from patterns and room shapes that were never planned. A careful fitter keeps a straight lay near 5% to 8% waste by thinking ahead about every cut.
Floor Optimizer does that thinking for the whole floor at once. It plans where each offcut goes next, allows for the width of your saw blade, and shows the real waste for your room.

What is Floor Optimizer?
Floor Optimizer is an online flooring layout planner for DIYers and flooring fitters. You draw your room or whole floor plan to your measurements, enter the boards you plan to buy and pick a laying pattern, and it places every board in your actual room shape. From that layout it works out the waste, the exact packs to buy and a board-by-board cut list, so the floor is planned before anything is bought or cut. It runs in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

Frequently asked questions
- How much flooring waste is normal?
- When cutting by hand, roughly 5% to 8% for a straight lay in a simple room, 8% to 12% with alcoves or angles, 10% to 15% on the diagonal, and 15% to 20% for herringbone or chevron. A planned layout usually does better, except for chevron.
- How does reusing offcuts reduce waste?
- Offcuts from the ends of rows start later rows or fill gaps elsewhere, as long as the joint stagger holds. Done across the whole floor, that removes most of the waste a straight lay creates.
- Does it allow for the saw blade?
- Yes. Enter your blade width and each cut reserves it, so several pieces planned from one board still fit after cutting.
- Is the lowest waste layout always best?
- Not always. The leanest layout can be off centre or need more cuts. The planner lets you pick Balanced look or Fewer cuts instead and shows what that costs.
