Plan the first and last row so neither ends up as a sliver
The most common flooring regret is a last row that is only a couple of centimetres wide. It looks wrong, it is fiddly to fit, and strips that narrow often work loose. It happens because the first row was laid with full boards without dividing the room width first.
Floor Optimizer works out every row before the first board goes down. It warns you about thin strips, and you can choose where the narrow rows go: one side, the other, balanced on both sides, or spread evenly across the room.

What is Floor Optimizer?
Floor Optimizer is an online flooring layout planner for DIYers and flooring fitters. You draw your room or whole floor plan to your measurements, enter the boards you plan to buy and pick a laying pattern, and it places every board in your actual room shape. From that layout it works out the waste, the exact packs to buy and a board-by-board cut list, so the floor is planned before anything is bought or cut. It runs in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

Frequently asked questions
- How wide should the last row of laminate be?
- Most manufacturers ask for at least a third to half a board width. Below that the strip is weak and hard to click in. The planner lets you set your minimum and warns about anything narrower.
- How do I avoid a thin last row?
- Divide the room width by the board width before you start, and if the remainder is small, rip the first row too so both ends are equal. The balanced setting does this automatically.
- What does balanced rip placement do?
- It splits the leftover width between the first and last rows, so both are the same width instead of one full row and one sliver.
- What about walls that are not straight?
- Rows meeting a wall at an angle taper along their length. The planner shows the tapered rows and gives the dimensions of each tapered piece in the cut list.
